Australia: big country, big attractions
Is big always better? Well, when it comes to kitsch holiday attractions in Australia it seems the answer is a loud, super-sized Y.E.S. What started with one very Big Banana, erected on the Pacific Highway near Coffs Harbour in 1964 by banana plantation owner John Landi to attract passers-by to his roadside stall, led to a nation-wide obsession with "big things". So much so that today you'll find more than 150 (and counting) big attractions dotting the highways and byways of Australia.

Let's go surfin' now, everybody's learning how
I've climbed the Drakensburg Mountains in South Africa, I've canoed the wild waters of the Zambezi River, I've even skied the alpine slopes of Romania, but somehow having grown up on the east coast of Australia - a country blessed with some of the world's most enviable beaches - I've never learned to surf. This is why today I find myself about to embark on a two-day surf camp at Seven Mile Beach on the southern New South Wales coast.

Fresh from the farm: food fossicking through Brisbane's Powerhouse Markets
The pungent smell of Tahitian limes fills my nostrils. Closing my eyes, I breathe deeply allowing the intensity of their aroma to envelop my senses. "Lady, here's your limes," a male voice suddenly interrupts my moment of bliss. Opening my eyes, I look blankly at the heavy-set man before me who is impatiently waving a bag of small green limes. "Lady, your limes," he again shakes the bag. While not quite The Comedy Company's Con the Fruiterer, as the stall vendor hands me the limes I can't help thinking: "Bewdiful. Coupla days!"

Ten great outback pubs
There's nothing we Aussies like more than to crack open a "cold one" on a hot summer's day. But when you're in the outback, stopping at a welcoming watering hole to wash down the taste of dust with an ice-cold beer is the closest sensation to heaven as you're likely to get.

Australia's Standing Stones
In Glen Innes, located just a short hour's drive from Armidale in the New England tablelands of New South Wales, they take their Celtic roots seriously. And if you think they're kidding you'll find plenty of monoliths, obelisks, columns, pillars and slabs to prove it.

Africa: 24 hours in Cape Town
Cape Town is an electric, cosmopolitan city that has it all. With sun-soaked, sandy beaches, rolling vineyards, a vibrant waterfront and a flat-topped stone behemoth slap-bang in the centre this is one city that screams: location , location , location ! Having long-since shaken off the shackles of apartheid, a renewed sense of excitement has enveloped South Africa's " Mother City " . The buzz is almost palpable. Everywhere you look it seems as if yet another camera crew has taken up residence to shoot a new film, TV commercial or fashion magazine spread. While a macroscopic view of Cape Town can seem daunting, if 24 hours is all you've got here's what I'd recommend.

Everyone's Africa: South Africa
South Africa is a diamond in the rough - scratch the surface and it positively sparkles. Its rich history, diverse cultures, abundant wildlife, mesmerising landscapes and sophisticated infrastructure make it a gem of a destination. With this in mind, we've designed three distinct two-week tours to suit: The First Time Visitor, The Africa Addict and The Connoisseur. These tours, however, provide only a mere taste of what South Africa has in store for you.

Road trip: going a little offbeat in South Africa
If you think a holiday in South Africa is only about safaris, the big five and township tours, you're missing out. Take a detour off the major highways and you'll find a host of attractions that are the stuff of urban legends. With everything from a 'sex shop' that doesn't sell sex and a memorial to a dead cat and a madcap donkey cart derby, who says there's nothing interesting, or dare I say offbeat, to do in South Africa? All it takes is a bit of adventure and an open mind to discover what else is around the bend. So gather some friends and get ready to hit the road to see the country's quirkiest attractions.

The buzz about Baz Bus
"So where you heading to?" the clerk behind the reception desk asks as I hand back my room key. "Coffee Bay," I reply excitedly. "How are you getting there?" she enquires. I've not long arrived in South Africa and am about to go on my first bus trip up the east coast, so I would love her to tell me what to expect. "Bus," I answer. "Oh … well, good luck with that," she smiles wryly.

On the Prowl in the Serengeti
Without warning our driver brought the Landrover to a screeching halt just metres short of large male lion which had suddenly emerged from the scrub at the side of the road. The driver then eased the vehicle into reverse and almost started moving before he noticed that a lioness and her cubs now filled the rear view mirror. Moments ago I had been despairing that I would leave Tanzania 's Serengeti National Park without ever having spied a lion. Now as I reached excitedly for my camera I felt like I was caught in the middle of a National Geographic wildlife special.
