America’s great southwest

The backdrop for countless Western movies, the Southwest region of the United States is defined by some of the world's most scenically spectacular landscapes. Most people are surprised, some even shocked, when they find out I travel alone. Reactions vary from long, sympathetic stares to appalled cries of: "Don't you get lonely?" Tears in Tobruk

It's just gone 5am on Anzac Day morning and I'm sitting in a car a million miles from home, lost somewhere in dark streets on the outskirts of Tobruk, Libya. My driver, David, is knocking on the door of a nearby house that stands sentry in the flat, desolate landscape. Despite the inviting glow of an outside light, the house's occupants cannot be woken from their slumber and David returns defeated. Looking down at the folded piece of paper in my hand, my heart sinks and my eyes begin to well. "Please let us find it in time" I silently pray. David's sister, Fatma, my guide and translator who is sitting in the front passenger seat, turns to me and seeing my despair reassures, "Don't worry, we'll find the cemetery."

Sydney Harbour songline

The rhythmic motion of the boat as it sways in time to the slow tap, tap, tap of the message sticks is mesmerising. Listening to the recording as it filters through the boat's speakers, I lose myself, deep in thought. A seagull squawks as it flies overhead, then the boat shudders and splutters as it comes to life. Shielding my eyes from the glaring sun I become aware of my surroundings. Before me Sydney's Circular Quay is a frenetic hive of energy, with lunchtime shoppers and commuters scurrying about impatiently in the city's searing heat. I'm aboard The Deerubbun, a former navy torpedo recovery vessel now owned by Tribal Warrior Association, and am about to take a tour of Sydney Harbour. While numerous boat cruises ply Sydney's busy waterways every day, what is unusual about this cruise is that it offers an Aboriginal perspective on the city's famous harbour.

Let’s go surfin’ now, everybody’s learning how

I've climbed the Drakensburg Mountains in South Africa, I've canoed the wild waters of the Zambezi River, I've even skied the alpine slopes of Romania, but somehow having grown up on the east coast of Australia - a country blessed with some of the world's most enviable beaches - I've never learned to surf. This is why today I find myself about to embark on a two-day surf camp at Seven Mile Beach on the southern New South Wales coast.

Road trip: going a little offbeat in South Africa

If you think a holiday in South Africa is only about safaris, the big five and township tours, you're missing out. Take a detour off the major highways and you'll find a host of attractions that are the stuff of urban legends. With everything from a 'sex shop' that doesn't sell sex and a memorial to a dead cat and a madcap donkey cart derby, who says there's nothing interesting, or dare I say offbeat, to do in South Africa? All it takes is a bit of adventure and an open mind to discover what else is around the bend. So gather some friends and get ready to hit the road to see the country's quirkiest attractions.
